The Griffin Line of the Central New England Railroad was built in the early part of the nineteenth century by the Central New England Railway as part of their main line to Boston. By the later part of the century, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad had absorbed the Central New England along with most other railroads in Connecticut. After the failure of the New Haven and its successor, Penn Central, the line saw limited use under Conrail and eventual abandonment by the 1980’s.

In the Mid 1990’s, the now state-owned track got a new lease on life when a building supply chain built a regional warehouse adjacent to the tracks of the dormant line in Bloomfield, just north of Hartford. A. J. Belliveau, a railroad construction contractor out of Newington, bid to operate the line and the Central New England Railroad Griffin line was born.

Ride along with Black 5 Video as we take you on a cab ride from end-to-end on this historic short line with the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts specials that ran out of Hartford on July 18 and 19, 2009.
